Association of Mediterranean Diet Adherence With Anthropometric Measures and Lipid Profile in Adolescents With Overweight or Obesity

Öz

Aim: This study examined the association of Mediterranean diet adherence with anthropometric measures, body composition, and lipid profile in adolescents with overweight or obesity.Material and Methods: Data from 246 adolescents aged 10–19 years were analyzed in this cross-sectional study. Mediterranean dietary adherence was scored with KIDMED. Anthropometric and body composition measurements were obtained during the study assessme nt, whereas lipid results were extracted from medical records. Comparisons across adherence categories were performed with parametric, nonparametric, or chi-square tests, as appropriate. Hierarchical linear regression was used to estimate independent associations. Age and sex were included in the anthropometric models, and body mass index standard deviation score (BMI-SDS) was added as a covariatein the LDL cholesterol model. Results: Low, moderate, and high Mediterranean diet adherence accounted for 32.5%, 48.8%, and 18.7% of cases, respectively. BMI-SDS, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, triponderal mass index, and LDL cholesterol varied across the three adherence categories. In the regression models, the coefficients for high versus low adherence were −0.386 for BMI-SDS (p=0.006), −0.032 for waist-to-height ratio (p=0.022), −1.464 for triponderal mass index (p=0.004), and −12.986 mg/dL for LDL cholesterol (p=0.003). No between-group differences were detected in body fat percentage, trunk fat percentage, visceral adiposity index, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, or dyslipidemia prevalence. Conclusion: Among adolescents with overweight or obesity, those with high Mediterranean diet adherence had lower values for weightrelated anthropometric indices and LDL cholesterol.
