Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relation between the healthy lifestyle behaviors and the risk of type 2 diabetes in healthcare professionals.
Material and Methods: The study was conducted with 164 volunteer physicians and nurses employed in a Health Practice and Research Hospital in southeastern Turkey. A descriptive questionnaire, Type 2 Diabetes Risk Questionnaire and Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale were used to collect the data.
Results: Mean scores of the participants in the Diabetes Risk Questionnaire and Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale were 6.45±4.08 and 121.95±19.65, respectively. A significant negative correlation was found between the mean scores of the Diabetes Risk Questionnaire and Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale. Furthermore, it was found that other predictors, such as body mass index, high blood glucose, and daily had a cumulative effect of up to 65% on the diabetes risk.
Conclusion: Even though the participants’ average age was young and BMI score was normal, the low rate of daily exercise suggests that the risk may increase in the future.
