The aim of this study is to reveal the effects of two different precommercial thinnings on diameter at breast height, basal area and volume increments in narrow-leafed ash (Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl.) plantations established in Sinop, Turkey. Two different precommercial thinnings were applied in the sample plots selected from narrow-leafed ash plantation, and in the first precommercial thinning (I1), the ash individuals grown as a result of planting were left in the field and measured. Naturally grown ash individuals in the next process, on the other hand, were cut and removed from the field, and the distance established by planting in this way (approximately 2 x 2 m) was tried to be maintained. In the second precommercial thinning (I2), the ash individuals grown naturally after planting were left in the field and measured together with the ash individuals grown with planting. Release cuttings at sample plots started in 2004 and the first measurement was carried out this year. Then, at the end of the 2007 growth period, the diameters at breast height of the trees were obtained and evaluations were made depending on the three-year increment results. As a result of the analysis of covariance for diameter at breast height, basal area and volume increments for three years (2004-2007), it was revealed that there were statistically significant differences between the treatments at 99% confidence level. It was determined that the three-year diameter at breast height increments of I1 and I2 treatments in the sample plots were 1.51 cm and 0.65 cm, respectively. Regarding the basal area increment, it was determined that increments of 10.31 m2ha-1 in the I1 treatment and 3.36 m2ha-1 in the I2 treatment were found. In terms of total volume increment, I1 treatment with an increment value of 93.01 m3ha-1 had a much higher increment value compared to the I2 treatment (24.27 m3ha-1). In the study, it has been revealed that removing the individuals naturally grown in the planting area in the next process and providing again 2 x 2 m distance between the trees has a significant effect on both the increase in the values of diameter at breast height increment and the values of the total basal area and volume increments per hectare.
