The Effect of Organizational Ethical Climate Perceptions of Sports Organization Employees on Their Whistleblowing Tendencies

Abstract

This study was aimed to examine the effect of sports organization employees' perceptions of organizational ethical climate on their whistleblowing tendencies. The study was conducted using a descriptive and correlational survey design, which falls within the general survey model of quantitative research methods. A total of 240 personnel, including 110 women and 130 men, were selected through purposive sampling. In the study, the “Organizational Ethical Climate Scale” and the “Whistleblowing Scale” were used as data collection tools. A negative, low to moderate significant relationship was found between certain subdimensions of the organizational ethical climate and specific subdimensions of whistleblowing. It was observed that the climate for behavior, a subdimension of the organizational ethical climate scale, had a significant predictive effect on both the non-action and positive attitude towards whistleblowing subdimensions of the whistleblowing scale. In addition, the climate for rules, another subdimension of the ethical climate scale, was found to significantly predict the fear of retaliation subdimension. The results revealed that the organizational ethical climate may influence whistleblowing behavior rather than directly. In future studies, mediating or moderating variables that may explain the indirect relationship between organizational ethical climate and whistleblowing behavior can be examined.
