The Effect of Gymnastics Training on Movement Skills in Individuals with Mental Disabilities: A Literature Review

Öz

This systematic review examines the effects of gymnastics-based physical activity interventions on motor skill development in children and adolescents with disabilities between January 2017 and March 2025. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Studies were included if they implemented structured gymnastics or movement-based programs and targeted motor outcomes such as balance, coordination, flexibility, or muscular strength. Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. The interventions ranged from 5 to 16 weeks with frequencies between one to three sessions per week. Most programs yielded significant improvements in balance, flexibility, strength, and motor coordination across intellectual, developmental, and physical disability groups. Geographic diversity was observed, with studies from Europe, Asia, and North America. Despite methodological heterogeneity, the overall findings suggest that gymnastics-based interventions are effective and feasible for enhancing motor performance in youth with disabilities. These programs offer a promising avenue for inclusive physical activity promotion and functional independence. Future research should prioritize standardized protocols, long-term impact evaluations, and culturally tailored implementation strategies. The findings suggest that gymnastics programs are a promising tool for enhancing physical and social inclusion in social work practice.
