Remote
sensing is actively involved in the planning and management of natural and
artificial resources. It gives high precision results especially in agriculture
and vegetation applications. Detailed information on land use is an important
basis for a country's economic and agricultural structuring/reform. In this
study, temporal changes of cotton cultivated areas were examined by using
Landsat satellite images The study area was selected as Harran Plain, Sanlıurfa.
Landsat 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2019 satellite images are classified by Support
Vector Machines (DVM) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). General classification accuracy was
calculated as 98.34%, 97.75%, 99.79%, 95.43%, and 96.99% respectively. The
results obtained with SVM; the cultivated area was calculated as 306.740 decares
in 2000, 771.330 decares in 2005, 1.012.930 decares in 2010, 902.760 decares in
2015 and 1.319.400 decares in 2019. Areas found with NDVI; it is 331.890
decares in 2000, 804.700 decares in 2005, 968.260 decares in 2010, 870.690
decares in 2015 and 1.288.020 decares in 2019. NDVI and SVM results were
correlated and analyzed. Detecting agricultural products with high accuracy and
monitoring the change of product amount in time is beneficial for both regional
and national interests. Sustainable and manageable agricultural areas will
facilitate agricultural planning.
