Fantastic in Turkish Cinema: Analyzing the Movie Adsız Cengaver According to Greimas's Agential Exemplification

Öz

Linguists generally use two methods to understand a narrative: The syntactic method developed by V. Propp and the paradigmatic method developed by structuralists such as Levi-Strauss and Greimas. While the first method focuses on the functions in a narrative, the second analyses the deep structures underlying the functions. Greimas calls the thirty-one functions that Propp identified for fairy tale as actants. Greimas is not interested in what the characters are, but what they do and emphasizes the deep structure underlying the actions. Based on this analysis of Greimas, fantastic narratives can be analyzed in depth. Fairy tales, legends and mythologies feed fantastic narratives. Fantastic films, a genre in cinema, can also be analyzed with Greimas' method. The so-called fantastic or historical fantastic films, which were once in the category of B-movies in Yeşilçam cinema, can be considered in this group. The present study analyses the film Adsız Cengaver (1970) directed by Halit Refiğ, deemed fantastic to Turkish cinema, within this paradigmatic framework created by Greimas and reveals the deep substructure of this film.

Türk Sinemasında Fantastik: Adsız Cengaver Filminin Greimas’ın Eyleyensel Örnekçesine Göre Çözümlenmesi

Öz

Dilbilimciler bir anlatıyı anlamak için genellikle iki yöntem kullanırlar: Bunlardan biri V. Propp’un geliştirdiği sözdizimsel metot, diğeri de Levi-Strauss ve Greimas gibi yapısalcıların geliştirdiği paradigmatik metottur. İlk yöntem bir anlatıdaki işlevler üzerine odaklanırken, ikincisi işlevlerin altında yatan derin yapıları çözümler. Propp’un masallar için belirlediği otuz bir işlevi, Greimas eyleyenler olarak adlandırır. Greimas karakterlerin ne olduğuyla değil, ne yaptığıyla ilgilenir ve eylemlerin altındaki derin yapı üzerinde durur. Greimas’ın bu çözümlemesinden hareketle fantastik anlatılar derinlemesine çözümlenebilir. Fantastik anlatılar yapısı gereği masallar, efsaneler ve mitolojilerden beslenir. Sinemada bir tür olan fantastik filmler de Greimas’ın yöntemiyle incelenebilir. Bir dönem Yeşilçam sinemasında B-filmleri kategorisinde bulunan fantastik veya tarihi fantastik olarak adlandırılan filmler bu grupta ele alınabilir. Mevcut çalışma, Türk sinemasında fantastik olarak değerlendirilen Halit Refiğ’in yönetmenliğini yaptığı Adsız Cengaver (1970) adlı filmi Greimas’ın oluşturduğu bu paradigmatik çerçevede çözümlemiş ve bu filmin derin alt yapısını açığa çıkarmıştır.
