Mathematical Studies of Mehmet Misbâh, One of the First Civilian Engineer-Mathematician of the Ottomans, and his Articles Published In Journal of The Darulfunun Faculty of Science
Abstract
Mehmet Misbâh, who was educated at Hendese-i Mülkiye Mektebi (The Civilian School of Engineering), one of the first institutions providing civilian engineering education in the Ottoman Empire, was sent to Paris after his graduation for two years to fill the permanent teaching posts at the school. After he returned to the country, he gave lectures on mathematics and geometry at the Mühendis Mekteb-i Âlîsi (The Academy of Emgineering) and Kondüktör Mektebi Âlîsi (Conductors School of Higher Education). These institutions were the first civilian engineering school of the Ottoman Empire which were transformed into Istanbul Technical University and Yıldız Technical University, respectively, in the Republican period. Although it is said that Mehmet Misbâh's analytical geometry book exists in the archives, a copy of this book could not be found. Misbâh Efendi's only accessible book, Hesaba Dair Fâideli Mesâil I, coauthored with Namık Ekrem (1878-1917), contains simple questions and solutions at the primary level. In addition, Misbâh Efendi has more than twenty articles, mostly on mathematics, appeared in the prestigious periodicals of his time. His articles published in Darülfünûn Fünun Fakültesi Mecmuası (Journal Of The Darülfünun Faculty Of Science), are exceptionally notable for having high-level mathematical content. No original contribution could be found in Mehmet Misbâh's articles when these were evaluated mathematically. These articles can be considered as supplementary resources for the lectures and mostly written with the aim of clarifying the mathematical issues that his students had difficulty during the lectures. Mehmet Misbâh did not adopt a new approach in his articles published in Darülfünûn Fünun Fakültesi Mecmuası (Journal Of The Darülfünun Faculty Of Science), but nevertheless his mastery of mathematical subjects displays that he was capable of teaching mathematics at the university level. In addition, in the light of all the data, it might be safe to state that Mehmet Misbâh was one of the first civilian engineers-mathematicians of his time.
