TÜKETİM KÜLTÜRÜ VE POSTMODERN BENLİK: KONUŞABİLİYORUM!™'DA PARODİ VE PASTİŞ

Öz

George Saunders’ın KONUŞABİLİYORUM!™ adlı öyküsü, tüketim kültürünü ve insan ilişkilerinin metalaşmasını hicveden postmodern bir eserdir. Bu makale, öyküde kullanılan parodi ve pastiş tekniklerini analiz ederek, Saunders’ın toplumsal yapıları eleştirel bir şekilde nasıl yapıbozuma uğrattığını inceler. Öyküde, bir ebeveynin bebek konuşma simülasyonu yapan bir üründen duyduğu memnuniyetsizliği dile getirdiği müşteri şikayetine verilen yanıt üzerinden, kurumsal retoriğin absürtlüğü vurgulanır. Kurumsal dilin yapaylığı ve tüketiciyi manipüle etme biçimleri parodi yoluyla eleştirilirken, teknolojinin insan ilişkilerini nasıl bozduğuna dair bir yorum sunulur. Çalışma, Saunders’ın öyküsünde postmodern parodi ve pastiş kullanımını, tüketim toplumunun bireysel kimlikler üzerindeki etkilerini ve ebeveynliğin metalaştırılmasını ele alarak çözümler. Teknoloji ve tüketim kültürünün bireyleri nasıl yabancılaştırdığı ve insani etkileşimleri nasıl yapaylaştırdığı, mizahi ve eleştirel bir bakış açısıyla değerlendirilir. Öykü, tüketim odaklı bir dünyada insan ilişkilerinin doğasını ve gerçeklik algısını sorgularken, okurları içinde yaşadıkları sistemleri yeniden düşünmeye sevk eder. George Saunders, bu eserinde sadece çağdaş kapitalist kültürü eleştirmekle kalmaz, aynı zamanda edebi anlatının gücünü kullanarak okuru eleştirel bir farkındalığa yönlendirir.

CONSUMER CULTURE AND THE POSTMODERN SELF: PARODY AND PASTICHE IN I CAN SPEAK!™

Abstract

George Saunders’ short story I CAN SPEAK!™ is a postmodern work that satirizes consumer culture and the commodification of human relationships. This article analyzes the parody and pastiche techniques used in the story to examine how Saunders critically deconstructs social structures. The absurdity of corporate rhetoric is emphasized in the story through a response to a customer complaint in which a parent expresses dissatisfaction with a product that simulates baby talk. The artificiality of corporate language and the ways it manipulates consumers are criticized through parody, while a commentary is offered on how technology disrupts human relationships. The study analyzes the postmodern use of parody and pastiche in Saunders’ short story by addressing the effects of consumer society on individual identities and the commodification of parenting. How technology and consumer culture alienate individuals and artificialize human interactions is evaluated from a humorous and critical perspective. While the story questions the nature of human relationships and the perception of reality in a consumer-focused world, it prompts readers to rethink the systems they live in. In this work, George Saunders not only criticizes contemporary capitalist culture, but also directs the reader to a critical awareness by using the power of literary narrative.
