A THREAT OR A TOOL? A PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY BASED ON STUDENT EXPERIENCES IN COMPUTER-ASSISTED TRANSLATION (CAT) COURSES

Öz

Rapid technological developments have led to significant transformations in the translation field. The development of machine translation (MT) and computer-assisted translation (CAT) technologies has had a direct impact on both the practice of translation and on the training of translators. Some translators and students see these technologies as a threat to their profession, while others view them as tools that enhance their professional practice or help them learn translation skills. This research aims to elaborate on how undergraduate students perceive and expect CAT tools to be used in translator training, as well as how they personally use CAT in their practice of translation. The research design was based on phenomenology and qualitative methodology methods. Data were collected through a qualitative survey with six open-ended questions submitted to CAT students through Google Forms. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis. The results of this research showed that students generally viewed CAT tools as complex, difficult to use, and threatening to their professional identity before completing the CAT course. However, their views about CAT tools changed dramatically after their practical experiences during the CAT course. Additionally, students reported that they see CAT tools as systems that help them to complete translations faster, have consistent terminology, and create higher quality translations. More importantly, the CAT course helped to promote students’ technical skills and reinforce their understanding of their professional role, ethical issues, and confidence in their translation abilities.
