COMMUNICATIVE FUNCTIONS IN MAGAZINE COVER HEADLINES AND THEIR SUBLINES: AN ANALYSIS OF DER SPIEGEL (2024)
Öz
This study investigates how communicative functions are linguistically realized in magazine cover headlines and their accompanying sublines. The analysis is based on 52 issues of Der Spiegel published in 2024, including 52 main headline-subline and 150 secondary headline-subline units. Methodologically, it combines qualitative close reading with quantitative distributional analysis through function-driven manual coding, and the findings are statistically evaluated using chi-square (χ²) tests of independence. Building on the functional-pragmatic model proposed by Held (2005), this study develops a coding framework that captures five key functions: captatio, presentation, teasing, steering, and rhetorical attraction. Headlines predominantly serve attention-oriented and engagement-related functions, particularly captatio, teasing, and rhetorical attraction, realized through condensation, evaluative lexis, and figurative language. In contrast, sublines consistently perform presentation and steering functions by providing referential specifications and explanatory structures. This reflects a two-step process of attraction followed by interpretive guidance and stabilization. Drawing on Held’s (2005) model, the study offers an applicable framework for analyzing magazine cover headlines and contributes to research on media discourse and functional linguistics. Although limited to a single publication and timeframe, the findings provide a basis for future research on cross-linguistic comparisons, multimodal integration, and digital headline practices.
