A CRITICAL DISABILITY READING OF BLINDNESS AND IDENTITY IN BRIAN FRIEL’S MOLLY SWEENEY

Öz

Molly Sweeney (1994) demonstrates blindness as a medical situation and as a complicated case in which comprehension, identity and social codes come together. The play discusses the cultural concepts surrounding disability and the ultimate ambition to normalize blindness through Molly, her husband Frank, and ophthalmologist Mr. Rice. Instead of reflecting blindness as a medical problem, Friel presents it as a communally constructed condition formed by power relations and regulating notions of ability. In this way, the play leads the audience to reconsider the hegemonic contexts via which disability has conventionally been interpreted, and it uncovers the challenging considerations of blindness. This study claims that Molly’s situation undermines the prevailing medical model of disability by revealing the difficulties imposed by the people who give importance to sight as the first signifier of normalcy. Her temporary vision after the operation causes fragmentation rather than happiness since she loses her ability to identify items around her. In this respect, this article aims to show how Molly’s blindness acts as a socially established and ideologically facilitated practice while the play reveals the borders of medical intervention and defies some expectations about the norms of normalcy through Critical Disability Theory.
