Investigation of Self-Esteem and Self-Efficacy Levels of Vocational High School Students During the Internship Application: The Example of Tourism Vocational High School
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare the self-esteem and self-effcacy levels of the adolescents before and after the internship. In Tourism and Hotel Management high schools, a six-month internship period is carried out so that students can put their professional skills into practice. In this study, the Coopersmith self-esteem scale and children's self-efficacy scale were applied to 74 students before and after the internship to determine the changes in the students' self-esteem and self-efficacy during the internship. When the results obtained from the T-test and factorial Anova tests in mixed designs were examined, significant differences were found in the self-esteem and self-efficacy scores of the students before and after the internship. While there are significant differences for academic and social self-efficacy from the sub-dimensions of the self-efficacy scale for children; No significant difference was found for emotional self-efficacy. In the one-to-one interviews with 16 students after the internship, it was seen that the students had positive thoughts about the practices they did during the internship. As a result of the research, it was found that there was a difference in the self-esteem and self-efficacy of the participants after the internship; For other types of high schools, the subject of which extracurricular or school reinforcing activities can be applied for the development of students' self-esteem and self-efficacy was discussed.
