Öz
This
study was carried out to determine the effect of insufficient mathematics
knowledge-skills of social studies teacher candidates on the achievements in
Social Studies curriculum. It is necessary to know the subjects that teacher
candidates who are the teachers of the future have difficulty in basic
mathematics. In the study, descriptive method based on survey model was used to
reveal an existing situation. An open-ended test with 5 questions and a written
interview form were prepared by the researchers and applied to randomly
selected 50 prospective teacher candidates from Social Sciences teaching
department of education faculty of a public university in the academic year of
2018-2019. In the study, the problems experienced by social studies teacher
candidates, the lack of mathematical knowledge-skills that causes problems in
Social Studies course, reflect on themselves of the problems and the
suggestions of prospective teachers about solving these problems were
evaluated. Quantitative data analysis techniques were also used in data
analysis. Findings from qualitatively analyzed data showed that the inadequate
mathematics background of teacher candidates had negative effects on teaching
and learning of Social Studies. It has been determined that the problems
related to mathematics in the subjects of Social Studies course are mostly
related to inter-unit transformation, fractions and ratio-proportion. The
teacher candidates who participated in the study were pointed out that the
mathematical problems in Social Studies course cause time loss, feeling strange
