In 1978 a part of the Pamir Kyrgyz who lived in Afghanistan's Pamir area migrated to Pakistan and later to Turkey in 1982. This ethnic group settled in the province of Van, for which in time they came to be called the Van Kyrgyz. Due to these migrations this Kyrgyz community faced different material and moral challenges brought by different geographic and ethno-cultural environment. The study seeks to know the character of the change in traditions related to the birth and rites of passage in childhood of migrants occuring due to migration. Folkloric material compiled among the Van Kyrgyz in fielwork during the period 2010-2015 was compared with samples in Afghanistan (Pamir region).
