This study shows how Marxism, which is a philosophy, theory and worldview, and Surrealism, which is an avant-garde art movement, are interwined in Walter Benjamin’s thought. One of the aims of Surrealism is to reveal new possibilities, meanings, dimensions.Herein lies the fundamentally revolutionary aspect of Surrealism. The most important connection that the study aims to show is the liberating element that Surrealism finds in the unconscious and the revolutionary element that Benjamin finds in history. This study does not focus on Benjamin’s understanding of politics and art in general. According to Benjamin, the aura and magic that Surrealism wants to bring is the drunkenness that revolutionary attitude needs. The study touches upon the elements, such as phantasmagoria, mass culture, everyday objects and experiences, which can be use as the connection between Surrealism and revolutionary attitude. However, the real parallelism is between the emancipatory images to be found in the past with the voluntarist revolution interpretation of Marxism and Surrealism showing the liberating aspect of the unconscious versus the conscious against the mythical, progressive understanding of history. A Messianic intervention in the present time is also compatible with the Surrealistic conception of time-space. According to Marxism, in capitalism, a human being has a fragmented consciousness and alienated existence under the influence of ideology and commodity fetishism. According to Benjamin, Surrealism can help Marxism both in overcoming the fragmented consciousness and alienated human being by enabling to see new possibilities and meanings and in overcoming institutions and power structures such as capitalism and the state.
