RETHINKING BURNOUT IN THE DIGITAL AGE: DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF A PARSIMONIOUS BURNOUT SCALE
Öz
This study aims to re-examine the phenomenon of burnout in the context of modern working life, which is undergoing transformation due to digitalization, the widespread adoption of remote and hybrid work models, and increasing cognitive demands. While traditional approaches primarily explain burnout through emotional exhaustion and interpersonal dimensions, they reflect only to a limited extent the experiences generated by today’s work conditions, such as cognitive overload, constant mental engagement, and the blurring of work-life boundaries. Accordingly, the primary objective of this study is to develop a concise burnout scale that accounts for contemporary work conditions and to examine its psychometric properties. The study was conducted across three independent samples. Results from Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) indicated that the scale exhibits a two-dimensional structure: “Resource Depletion” and “Psychological Disengagement.” The findings indicate that this structure emerges consistently across different sectors and that the model possesses good fit indices. Within the scope of criterion-related validity, a positive and significant relationship was identified between burnout and intention to leave. Additionally, the scale was found to have a high level of internal consistency. In conclusion, this study contributes both theoretically and practically to the literature by providing a brief and reliable measurement tool that addresses burnout within the cognitive and psychological dynamics of modern work life. The scale items are presented in both English and Turkish at the end of the study.
