ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AIR POLLUTION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

The most important causes of environmental pollution are increasing industrialization and urbanization. While targeted economic growth for the countries is being carried out, environmental destruction is also increasing in the early years of economic growth. As the level of development increases, environmentally friendly products that use the technology intensively reduce the environmental pollution, but the measures taken are not sufficient to reduce environmental damage. Therefore, the relationship between environmental pollution and economic growth has been a subject of constant interest in the environmental economics literature. In this study; Turkey’s covering the 1960-2013 period, carbon dioxide as air pollution index (CO2) emissions and economic growth as an indicator of the gross domestic product (GDP) using data from a long period relationship between air pollution and economic growth were investigated. The CO2 variable is used as the dependent variable and the GDP variable is used as the independent variable. As a result of the unit root test of Zivot Andrews (1992), the series were found to be integrated in the first order. Then Gregory Hansen (1996) a cointegration test applied long period relationship between variables investigated. According to the results of the Gregory Hansen cointegration test, there was found a regime change model long period relationship between air pollution and income in Turkey for the period 1960-2013.
