KNOWLEDGE LEVELS OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS' GENETICALLY MODIFIED PRODUCTS: THE CASE OF EGE UNIVERSITY

The aim of this study is to determine the level of knowledge and consciousness of the university students about the genetically modified products and the socio-demographic and behavioral factors affecting them. The main material of the study consisted of 190 questionnaires calculated using proportional sample size formula. The study sample size was determined taking into account the 90 % confidence interval and the 10 % error margin. Data of the socio-demographic structure obtained from the questionnaires are summarized as descriptive statistics. In addition, factors affecting students' knowledge and consciousness about genetically modified products were analyzed using limited dependent variable regression model Probit estimation method. The students who participated in the survey were 63,7 % male and 36,3 % female. Out of students, 44,7 %, 19,5 % and 35,8 % were educated in science, health and social sciences faculties, respectively. The age of participants ranged from 18 to 30, with an average age of 21,8. According to the results of the probit regression model, there was a positive relationship between the students’ correct definition of the GMO and their montly income and their preferences of the healthy diets to overcome hungry. However, there was a negative relationship between the students’ correct definition of the GMO and their regular eating at home and thinking that GMO products were produced in Turkey. The results of the research showed that the socio demographic and behavioral characteristics of the students significantly affected their level of knowledge about GMO products. However, it can be said that the level of knowledge and consciousness that students have about GMO products does not turn into behavior, but this situation is only in the level of awareness.
