Countries Named After Linguistic and Ethnic Groups: An Analysis of Conflict Dynamics and Prevalence Between Dominant and Minority Groups

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 9 Sayı: 2, 106 - 125, 31.12.2025

Öz

This study examines the impact of country names that are constructed on linguistic and ethnic foundations on social structures. In countries whose names are based on language or ethnic groups, the power relations between the dominant group and minority groups are analyzed in the context of language policies, citizenship practices, and cultural rights. The article discusses the causes of linguistic and ethnic conflicts in such countries from historical, sociological, and political perspectives, highlighting how the status of an official language reinforces social inequalities. Through examples such as India, Türkiye, Israel, Spain, and Myanmar, the language and cultural rights demands of minority groups, as well as the state responses to these demands, are comparatively examined. Furthermore, countries such as Switzerland and Belgium, which have multilingual structures and inclusive policies, are presented as positive cases for preventing conflicts. The findings of the study demonstrate that differences based on language and ethnic identity do not necessarily have to be a source of conflict; when managed properly, these differences can serve as a resource for social cohesion and peace.
Keywords: Ethnic identity, language policy, minority rights, country names, social conflict, official language.
