Japanese Image in the Early Republican Thought
Öz
Roots of the interest for Japan in Turkish public opinion can be traced back to the Abdul Hamid II era, when first formal visits were paid. During this era, Emperor Meiji’s nephew visited Istanbul and after that, Ertuğrul Frigate was sent to visit Japan. During the Russo-Japanese War started in 1904, a strong sympathy towards the Japanese was seen in Turkish public opinion. Sympathic approach towards the Japanese in the Turkish intelligentsia of the era achieved to continue its existence after the Republic was founded.
Three main images are attributed to Japan by Early Republican thinkers. First one is “the devout warrior” image that highlights the military aptitudes of Japanese and their fearlesness in the battlefield. Second one is “the spiritual example” image that emphasises the power of Japanese spiritual life. Third one is “the Westernized Asian” image that highlights the Japanese being an Asian nation which could succeed to develop by taking Western civilization as an example.
Main aim of this work is to analyze these three main images that are attributed to Japan in early Republican literature. While analyzing the literature, the research is methodologically based on secondary resources. Source inspection is limited to the works that were produced during Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s presidential era.
