Effect of Intraoral Spray Application on Thirst and Thirst Discomfort in Patients Undergoing Gynecologic Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Study
Öz
This randomized controlled study aimed to evaluate the effect of intraoral cold water spray on thirst and thirst discomfort in patients after gynecologic surgery. A total of 58 patients were assigned to experimental (n=29) and control (n=29) groups. The experimental group received four intraoral sprays of cold water hourly from the first to the sixth postoperative hour, while the control group received routine care. Thirst severity (NRS) and Thirst Discomfort Scale scores were measured at the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 6th postoperative hours. Thirst severity scores in the experimental group were significantly lower than those in the control group at the 1st., 5th and 6th hours (p<0.01). Similarly, Thirst Discomfort Scale scores were significantly lower in the experimental group at the same time points (p<0.01). These findings indicate that intraoral cold water spray can be considered an effective and non-invasive nursing intervention in the management of postoperative thirst.
