Diagnosis And Treatment of Maxillary Transverse Deficiency: An Overview in Orthodontics

Abstract

Maxillary transverse deficiency is a common orthodontic condition characterized by narrow maxillary arches that can lead to various dental and skeletal discrepancies. This overview article aims to provide a comprehensive insight into the diagnosis and treatment of maxillary transverse deficiency in orthodontics. The diagnostic process involves clinical evaluation, dental casts analysis, and radiographic assessments such as cone-beam computed tomography to accurately assess the severity of the deficiency and identify associated anomalies. Various indices and measurements are utilized to quantify the transverse dimension and aid in treatment planning. Treatment options for maxillary transverse deficiency include orthopedic and orthodontic interventions. Rapid maxillary expansion is a common orthopedic approach that aims to widen the maxilla through gradual separation of the midpalatal suture. This technique is effective in skeletally immature patients with transverse deficiency and can address crowding, crossbites, and other malocclusions associated with narrow arches. Orthodontic mechanics following maxillary expansion are crucial to stabilize the achieved expansion and optimize dental occlusion. Retention protocols, occlusal adjustments, and coordination with other dental specialists may be necessary for comprehensive treatment outcomes. In conclusion, the diagnosis and treatment of maxillary transverse deficiency require a multidisciplinary approach involving accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment planning, and effective orthodontic interventions. Understanding the nuances of this condition and the available treatment modalities is essential for successful management and long-term stability of orthodontic outcomes.
