Mitik Karakter Hippolytos’u Konu Alan Roma Dönemi Lahitleri

Öz

Roma dönemi lahitlerinde sıklıkla mitolojik konuların ve mitik karakterlerin betimlendiği görülmektedir. Lahitlerde betimlenen bu mitik karakterlerden biri de Yunan mitolojisinin önemli figürlerinden biri Theseus ile Amazonlardan Hippolyte veya Antiope’nin oğulları olan Hippolytos’tur. Hippolytos’un hayatından kesitlerin yer aldığı sahneler Roma dönemindeki lahitlerde betimlenmiştir. Çalışmada öncelikle Hippolytos’un kim olduğu, antik yazarlardan Euripides ve Seneca’nın eserlerinde Hippolytos’un hayatının nasıl ele alındığı ele alınmıştır. Lahitler üzerindeki betimlerinin yorumlanması açısından özellikle bu iki antik yazarın verdikleri bilgiler önem arz etmektedir. Ardından Hippolytos lahitleri Attika ve Roma üretimi olarak iki ana başlığa ve bu başlıklarda tiplerine göre alt başlıklara bölünerek ele alınmıştır. Son olarak verilen örneklerle konu somutlaştırılmış ve Roma dönemi lahitlerde üslup değişimi kapsamında bu örnekler kendi aralarında gerek stil gerekse tarihlendirme açısından karşılaştırılmıştır. Kısacası mitolojik bir konunun Roma dönemindeki lahitlerde nasıl ve ne şekilde ele alındığı, stilistik ve tarihlendirme açısından Roma dönemi lahitlerinde MS 180 civarında meydana gelen üslup değişiminin ne gibi bir önem taşıyıp rol oynadığı araştırılmıştır.

Roman Sarcophagi Featuring the Mythical Character Hippolytus

Öz

It is seen that mythological subjects and mythic characters are frequently depicted in Roman period sarcophagi. One of these mythical characters depicted on sarcophagi is Hippolytus, the son of Theseus, one of the important figures of Greek mythology, and Hippolyte or Antiope from the Amazons. Scenes from Hippolytus' life are depicted on sarcophagi from the Roman period. In this study, first of all, it is discussed who Hippolytus is and how the life of Hippolytus is handled in the works of ancient writers Euripides and Seneca. The information provided by these two ancient authors is especially important in terms of interpreting the depictions on the sarcophagi. Then, Hippolytus sarcophagi are discussed under two main headings as Attic and Roman production, and these headings are divided into subheadings according to their types. Finally, the subject is concretized with the examples given and these examples are compared among themselves in terms of both style and dating within the scope of stylistic change in Roman period sarcophagi. In short, it is investigated how a mythological subject is handled in Roman sarcophagi, and what kind of importance the stylistic change that occurred around 180 AD in Roman sarcophagi in terms of stylistics and dating.
