Management and to define of related infections with tunnelled central venous catheter (Hickman type)

Öz

Long term indwelling central venous access devices are indispensible for the supportive care of cancer patients. These devices facilitate the antineoplastic cytotoxic therapy, the administration of intravenous fluids, blood products, medications including anti microbial agents and total parenteral nutrition. Intravascular catheter-related infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The most common causes of catheterrelated bloodstream infections are coagulase-negative staphylococci, staphylococcus aureus, aerobic gram negative bacilli, and candida albicans. Management of catheter-related infection varies accoding to the type of catheter involved. When a catheter-related infection is documented and a specific pathogen is identified, systemic antimicrobial therapy could be insufficient and if the central venous catheter or implanted catheter was not to be removed , antibiotic lock therapy is recommended
