Black Sea Mad Honey and Andromedotoxin Toxicity: a Patient With Nodal Ritm

Öz

The honey which is produced in Japan, Nepal, Brazil and the Karadeniz Region of Turkey is also known as the ‘mad honey' by Turkish people and contains Rhododendron ponticum nectar, which is known to cause severe bradycardia and hypotension. This honey is produced by Rhododendron species R. luteum and R. ponticum in the northern regions of Turkey. Grayanotoxin I also known as andromedotoxin, is only produced by Ericaceae plants and thought to be the compound which is responsible for the poisoning. Typical toxication symptoms are gastrointestinal and sometimes may cause life-threatening severe bradycardia and hypotension. Here we present the only patient in five years who attended to our clinic with the typical symptoms of toxication after the ingestion of Black Sea honey. Although the Black Sea Honey (Mad Honey) toxication is very rare, it is a situation to keep in mind that if it is not treated by early diagnosis it can turn into a mortal state.
