Comparison of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology and Biopsy Results in 34 Patients Diagnosed As Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Cytologically

Öz

Fine Needle Aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is widely in use for diagnosis of malignant and benign breast lesions. To analyze the accuracy of FNAB, we compared the cytological diagnosis with biopsy results retrospectively in 34 patients. Invasive ductal carcinoma was diagnosed in 34 patients with cytological evaluation and this diagnosis was confirmed in 24 patients with biopsy. Five patients were diagnosed as having tumour cytologically but could not be evaluated by biopsy because of miss follow-up. The biopsy results were different than carcinoma in 5 patients whom were cytologically diagnosed. The biopsy diagnosis was invasive pleomorphic lobular carcinoma in 2 patients, intraductal papilloma in 2 patients and granulomatous mastitis in 1 patient. FNAB is a feasible diagnostic tool if it is performed by experts on condition of adequate sampling and evaluation.
