Discoidin Domain Receptors (DDRs) as Novel Collagen Receptors and Their Importance

Öz

Extracellular matrix (ECM) provide scaffolding for cells and tissue compartments and also regulate communication between cells and tissues via cell surface receptors which are activated by components of the extracellular matrix. Collagen is one of the the major components of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Discoidin Domain Receptors (DDRs) is a novel family of tyrosine kinase collagen receptors that are activated by several types of collagens. The two members of these cell surface receptors, discoidin domain receptor 1 and 2, are widely expressed in different cell types and organs. DDRs play essential role in regulation of cell adhesion, proliferation and differentiation by binding to collagen and mediating metalloproteinase production. This review article summarizes current knowledge about these new collagen receptors and highlights their relations with crucial diseases such as tumor progression, atherosclerosis, inflammation and tissue fibrosis. We hope, this review may contribute to understanding of their complex roles in the pathogenesis of the wide range of diseases and may draw atraction to new researches on DDRs and lead to establishment of new therapeutical targets for the treatment of these diseases.
