Kisspeptins and Kisspeptin Neurons: Effects on Reproductive System and Hypothalamic Localizations

Öz

Peptides which are fragments of a precursor polypeptide of 145 amino acids encoded by Kiss-1 gene (1q32) and mediate their effects via GPR54 receptor, constitute the family of neuropeptides termed as kisspeptins. It has been known that the kisspeptins play important and key roles on neuroendocrine regulation of reproduction, puberty and ovulation in mammals. Distributions of kisspeptin neurons in brain regions on different mammal species, mapping studies and colocalizations with the other neuropeptids, hormones and mediators are still a matter of debates. Ongoing studies in our laboratory revealed that the groups of kisspeptin neurons were localized in anteroventral periventricular, preoptic periventricular and arcuate nuclei with increasing densities, respectively in female rats. Many aspects of the roles of kisspeptins on the neuroendocrine regulation of reproduction are still not clear, despite the knowledge of their regulatory effects on puberty and hypothalamic- pituitary-gonadal axis. We believe that, reviewing of kisspeptins and kisspeptin neurons on the basis of the recent literature would shed light on our knowledge in this area and further studies in the way of the roles of kisspeptin neurons in central nervous system.
