The Evaluation of the Autopsied Exhumation Cases in Bursa

Öz

Exhumation is the term used for the procedure of “unearthing the interred body” for postmortem examining. In our country, this procedure may only be allowed by either the decree of court or a legal permission from the prosecutor. The present study aimed to evaluate the medicolegal aspects of the exhumation cases, whose autopsies were conducted, in Bursa. The records of grave opening and corpse inspections, along with the autopsy reports, and if available toxicology and histopathology reports of 72 exhumation cases that have been autopsied by Morgue Department of Bursa branch of the Council of Forensic Medicine between 2003 and 2009 were reviewed. Half of these autopsy cases were female, where the other half was male. Ages varied between 0-95. Causes of exhumation were classified into unathorized interment (40.28% (n=29)), claims and complaints (33.33% (n=24)) and requisition by the public prosecutor due to ongoing investigation (26.39% (n=19)). The shortest duration of stay in the grave was 1 day, while the longest one lasted 2083 days. It is ascertained that the fundamental problem in Bursa and the surrounding area remains to be the unauthorized interments. Thereby, the public should be informed about this problem.
