Childhood Lead Exposure: Autism Symptoms, Differential Diagnosis and An Individual Annual Traıning Process

Lead poisoning remains an important health problem. Even at levels under toxic threshold irreversible mental or neuropsychological functio-nal impairment may occur in young children. Lead poisoning may cause cognitive and behavioral symptoms like autism as a result of neuro-toxicity. In this case report, we present a twenty-month-old boy admitted for atypical decline in acquired communication, social interaction, and motor skills, and deterioration of behaviors. We discussed on his differential and definitive diagnosis process. We would also like to emphasize that he re-gained his skills after one year of individual special education. During the differential diagnosis process, we found that the patient was exposed to lead. After the individual special education his autistic symptoms obvious resolved. This case report shows that environmental factors should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of young children with atypical autistic symptoms. In addition, individual special education may be helpful in the treatment of cognitive and behavioral disorders arising as a result of exposure to lead.
