Origins of the Hide and Sulung: One of the Basic Concepts of the Manor Land System

In terms of origin and meaning, Sulung is worthy of inclusion among the original concepts used in Anglo-Saxon England, such as "gavelkind, villainage, wergeld". As evidenced by Bede, Old English land books, Domesday, and other sources, land was parceled out and called hides or hiwiecs, typically holdings of households or families. The concept of hide or hiwiec is a land concept widely used in Anglo-Saxon England. These concepts represent a family's subsistence property. In other words, in the early Middle Ages, the size of the landholding enabled a family to both pay taxes in kind and meet their own food needs. This measure varies according to regions and population density. However, in the Kent documents, whose land information records are very clear in the ancient charter collections, another concept was used instead of hide. In these documents, a special calculation is made showing that four yorke is equal to one sulung in the subsection of the land that will provide a family's livelihood, called yoke. Therefore, four yokes equal one sulung. The concepts of sulung and hide can generally be used interchangeably. However, over time, the use of the concepts of hide and sulung and their meanings have changed accordingly. Nevertheless, the concepts of hide and sulung are rooted in agricultural practices and refer to a family's subsistence land. This study presents an original analysis of the origin of the concepts of hide and sulung and their historical evolution.

Manor Toprak Siteminin Temel Kavramlarından Hide ve Sulung’un Kökeni

Öz

Sulung köken ve anlam bakımından Anglo-Sakson İngiltere’sinde kullanılan, “gavelkind, villainage, wergeld” gibi orijinal kavramlar arasında yer almayı hak etmektedir. Bede’den, eski İngiliz arazi kitaplarından, Domesday’den ve diğer kaynaklardan bildiğimiz gibi arazi, hanelerin veya ailelerin tipik mülkleri olarak parsellenip ve hide veya hiwiec olarak adlandırılmaktadır. Hide veya hiwiec, Anglo-Sakson İngiltere’sinde yaygın olarak kullanılan arazi kavramlarıdır. Bu kavramlar bir ailenin geçimlik mülkünü temsil etmektedir. Yani Erken Orta Çağ da bir ailenin hem aynî türden vergisini ödemesini sağlayan hem de kendi yiyecek ihtiyaçlarını karşıladıkları arazi ölçüsüydü. Bu ölçü bölgelere ve nüfus yoğunluğuna göre değişmekteydi. Ancak antik tüzük koleksiyonlarında arazi bilgi kayıtları çok net olan Kent belgelerinde hide yerine başka bir kavram kullanılmıştır. Bu belgelerde bir ailenin geçimini sağlayacak arazilerin yorke adı verilen alt bölümünde dört yorke’un bir sulung’a eşit olduğunu gösteren özel bir hesaplama yapılmaktadır. Yani dört yorke bir sulung’a eşittir. Sulung ve hide kavramları genel anlamda birbirlerinin yerine kullanılabilmektedir. Ancak zamanla hide ve sulung kavramlarının kullanımları ve buna bağlı olarak da anlamlarında değişmeler olmuştur. Buna rağmen hide ve sulung başından beri tarımla ilgili kavramlardır ve bir ailenin geçimlik arazilerini ifade ederler. Bu çalışmada hide ve sulung kavramlarının kökeni ve anlamlarının tarihî gelişimi, birincil kaynaklara dayalı olarak özgün bir şekilde incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır.
