History as the Source of Soft Power: An Analysis Through Philhellenism
Öz
The primary objective of this study is to contribute to the development of the concept of soft power, which has, in recent years, become pervasive within the discipline of International Relations. Within this framework, the evolution of the concept of soft power was first examined, followed by a discussion of the critiques directed at it. It was emphasized that the absence of the historical dimension in the sources constituted a significant deficiency, and the rationale for incorporating history into these sources was clarified. In the subsequent section, the contribution of history to the soft power of a nation was demonstrated through the case study of Greece. The study ultimately concluded with a synthesis of the findings.
Qualitative research method was adopted in the study. In this context, the existing literature on the concepts of philhellenism and soft power was reviewed, and scholarly works in the fields of international relations, history, cultural studies, and political science were examined. Special attention was given to Joseph S. Nye’s influential studies on the notion of soft power.
