The Relationship Between Carotid Artery Intima Media Thickness and Mean Platelet Volume In Hemodialysis Patients

Öz

Objective: Chronic kidney disease is closely associated with cardiovascular disease. The prevalence and mortality rates of cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic kidney disease are significantly higher compared to those in the general population. Atherosclerosis is known to be the primary underlying pathology of cardiovascular disease, and carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) is considered the most reliable indicator indicator of atherosclerosis. This study aimed to examine the relationship between mean platelet volume (MPV) and CIMT in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: Data from 50 patients undergoing hemodialysis were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic characteristics, vital signs, chronic diseases, and laboratory results of the patients were collected. Descriptive statistics were expressed as mean, standard deviation, frequency, and percentage. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software (IBM SPSS for Windows, version 26), and a significance level of p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Elevated CIMT was found in 24 of the 50 patients studied. Mean platelet volume was higher in patients with elevated CIMT (11.57 fl) compared to those with normal CIMT (10.88 fl), and the difference between the groups was statistically significant (t-test sd: 0.98, p<0.05). Correlation analysis revealed a statistically significant, positive correlation between CIMT and MPV (r: 0.158, p<0.001). Conclusion: Mean platelet volume was found to be elevated in patients with increased CIMT. MPV is associated with atherosclerosis and suggesting MPV as a potential marker for cardiovascular risk in hemodialysis patients.
