The Perpetual Journey of Data: The Value Oriented Data Life Cycle Model
Öz
This article presents a value oriented framework for the data life cycle and proposes a holistic model that organizes the continuous and perpetual journey of data from its formation to its transformation into value. The proposed model fundamentally includes the Steps component and the supporting components of Focus Areas, Resources, Technologies, and Measures, and the flow presented within the Steps component covers three stages: Input / Base, Analytical / Interpretation, and Output / Presentation. The model clarifies how these components interact with each other and provides examples from financial and non-financial sectors to follow the value flow defined in the model. While positioning value as the visible subject of the data life cycle, it preserves the human as a higher-level actor who produces, interprets, and uses value. The proposed model deviates from the value creation approach of traditional data flow models, supply chain-focused data life cycle models, and human-focused data life cycle models, and offers a value-focused life cycle with the novelties it puts forward. Thus, the model provides a human-centered, value-creating, and self-renewing life cycle. The article also questions the benefits and challenges that will arise during the implementation of the model.
