Lean Management in Health Institutions: An Implementation Example in Bursa Province
Abstract
Purpose: The aim of the study is to present a sample study that can serve as a guide for organizations that will just start lean management and as a comparison element for those who are currently implementing lean management.
Methodology: In this study, the service processes in the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinic of a private hospital that has not applied lean management before were observed with a lean management perspective. As a result of the current situation analysis carried out with the value stream mapping technique and spaghetti diagrams, solution suggestions were presented to improve the waste, and the planned design was specified in the future state map and the gain predictions were calculated.
Findings: As a result, 77.64% in paper consumption costs; 100% in HIMS-related outages, test registration and barcode receiving processes; 50% in inspection registration and test result waiting times; In the ultrasound secretariat, an improvement of 11,66% was achieved in the process time that doesn't add value. In addition at the rate of 29.03% in the process steps of the patients; 17.39% of the total time spent in the hospital; 4.23% improvement was achieved in the value-added rate of the service and 6.23% in the non-value-added rate.
Originality: This study will contribute to the deficiency in the literature by adding a new one to the lean management practices on the basis of outpatient clinics.The fact that it deals with the flow of processes and the movements of the patient in the institution from different angles and is strong in terms of visual transmission also increases the originality value of the study.
