Detection of motile Aeromonas spp. in prepacked chicken meats

Abstract

In this study a total of 90 chicken meat that including 30 leg, 30 breast and 30 wing prepacked meat samples purchased from different supermarkets in Ankara were analysed for the presence of motile Aeromonas species. Isolation and identification of motile Aeromonas spp. prepacked chicken meat samples were held using method according to “Compendium of Microbiological Methods for the Analysis of Food and Agricultural Products”. It was determined that 78 samples (86,6 %) of total 90 chicken meat contaminated with motile Aeromonas spp. It was found that, 24 (80,0 %) of 30 leg samples, 28 (93,3 %) of 30 breast samples and 26 (86,6 %) of 30 wing samples were positive for motile Aeromonas spp. In this study, it was obtained 391 motile Aeromonas isolate and identified as Aeromonas hydrophila at 71,8 %, Aeromonas sobria at 18,1 % and Aeromonas caviae at 9,9 %. At the end of this study, it was determined that the high part of prepacked chicken meat as investigated were contaminated with motile Aeromonas spp. As a result, it was suggested that necessary precautions must be taken durin selling and at homes to prevent potential risk for public health that caused by motile Aeromonas spp
