The Fading Lure of Accession: Assessing the Diminishing Necessity of Türkiye’s EU Membership
Öz
The study argues that Türkiye’s open-ended accession process does not have to last for more decades since Türkiye’s current economic, social and even political circumstances have positively transformed in the course of time though there are some basic problems that must be resolved. The study contends that Türkiye’s EU membership is not as necessary as it was in the past, and bases its argument on two assertions. First, the EU’s attraction for accession has faded recently. Second, Türkiye’s advancements in various areas have made it to be self-sufficient. More briefly, the problem the study focuses on is that Türkiye’s prolonged EU membership process consumes time and efforts. The study’s argument is that the Turkish side should revise its position against the EU and steer the process itself as conditions have changed in favor of Türkiye. It also supports some of EU’s pretexts for not accepting Türkiye as a member and argues that the Turkish side should consider them in its accession process. The study utilizes a qualitative research method, incorporating a literature review to benefit from various existing views and statistics about the topic.
