EXPLORING PERFORMANCE OBSTACLES OF INTENSIVE CARE NURSES

Abstract

Objective: The research was conducted to investigate performance obstacles of intensive care nurses. Methods: The study is a descriptive and cross-sectional. Included in the study were 378 intensive care nurses (ICNs) who worked in the intensive care units (ICU) of eight public and three private hospitals in the province of Izmir and agreed to participate in the research. The data were collected between May 2010 and April 2011. For data collection, the nurse socio-demographic form and the survey form to analyze performance obstacles of intensive care nurses were used. The study was approved by the ethics committee and the institution. The data were evaluated by number, percentage distributions and correlations were analyzed by chi-square analysis. Results: Among the performance obstacles stated by ICNs, the most common ones were as follows: "Patients’ rooms are very close to each other" which referred to the environment (% 56.6), "non-isolated rooms within the unit I work in are well protected." which referred to equipment  (39.9%), "My patient load is in reasonable limits" which referred to organization (58.2%), and "I spent significant time for the training of the patients or their relatives." which referred to responsibility (29.6%). Performance obstacles regarding the help received by intensive care nurses referred to the time (37.4%), adequacy (37.3%) and practicality (36.0%) of the help given by the unit secretary. Of the other performance obstacles were “noise” “which referred to workspace in their shifts”, the statement "How much physical activity do you spend when you do your work?" (57.1%) which referred to workload in their shifts, fatigue (88.4%) which referred to mental state in their shifts, the statement "Today, have you considered only the most obvious problems and complaints of patients?" (44.0%) which referred to the quality of the care they provided and the statement “My job made me work very fast” (86.5%) which referred to work done in shifts. Conclusion: For the results, the performance obstacles that most of the ICNs experienced were determined and suggestions were made about these obstacles
