Transfer Anxiety: Common Emotional Experience of Patients in Intensive Care Unit and Their Families

Yıl 2009, Cilt: 13 Sayı: 1, 24 - 29, 01.06.2009

Öz

Staying in an intensive care unit is an important anxi- ety life for the individuals and their families. The seri- ousness of health problems for the patients staying in intensive care units and rapid changes in their health status and the ambiguity in their status increase the anxiety of both the patient and their families. Besides staying in intensive care unit, being discharged from intensive care units or being transferred to depart- ments also cause anxiety among the patients and their families. Most of the patients and their families don’t regard being discharged from intensive care units as a positive development. They think the care and observation will fail, they will not be in a suf- ficiently safe environment and they experience anxi- ety. These experienced anxieties are called transfer anxiety. Transfer anxiety negatively affects the heal- ing process of the patients and emotional problems continue after being discharged. For this reason, nurses in intensive care units should give holistic care in order to minimize the transfer anxiety levels of the patients and their families. They should effectively discharge their responsibility to inform them
