THE ANALYSIS OF THE EFFICIENT MARKET HYPOTHESIS FOR BANKING SECTOR BY USING LONG MEMORY MODELS

The Efficient Market Hypothesis proposed by Fama (1970) suggest that the stock prices full reflect all relevant information about the market and hence it is not possible to gain above average return. Fama (1970) suggested three different versions of market efficiency: weak, semi-strong and strong forms. In this manner, weak form efficient market hypothesis states that the stock prices exhibit random walk process and hence it is impossible to determine the stock price in the future by using its past value. In this paper, we examine whether the weak form efficient market hypothesis is valid for the banking sector index in the Istanbul Stock Exchange by means of long memory models for the periods of 1997-2018. According to the analysis result, the existence of long memory in the volatility of bank index was determined and accordingly it can be said that BIST banking sector does not provide weak form efficiency.
