Active Fault Data Base and Assesment of Earthquake Hazard for Turkey and Surrounding Regions

In this study, an active fault database in ArcGIS format is prepared as part of an international project, namely Earthquake Model of Middle East (EMME) Project for Turkey and surrounding regions. The active fault database is prepared for fault segments that may generate earthquakes with moment magnitude greater than 5.5. Fault sections are defined as part of a fault segment where at least one fault parameter (strike, dip, rake, seismogenic depth) is changed. The active fault database consists of 36 columns of entries such as fault length, strike, dip, rake, dip direction, slip rates, slip type etc. for each individual fault section. The entries also include the reference codes from which the parameters have been retrieved and compiled. Separately full references were given in a relational database. Additionally a digital library containing electronic files of the references is also compiled. In total, 1070 fault sections have been defined, having a total fault length of 23.356 km. In the second part of the study, the study area has been divided into 54 earthquake source zones. Using a seismicity catalogue (Kalafat et al., 2011) covering the time period 1900-2010 seismiciy parameters have been computed for each source zone. The b values of Gutenberg-Richter equation vary between 0.6 and 1.4 in Turkey. The computations have suggested that the North Anatolian and East Anatolian Fault Zones, the Aegean subduction zone, the western Cyprean subduction zone are the areas with the most notable seismic energy release
