TEXTILE DESIGN PATTERNS IN OTTOMAN MINIATURE ART

Öz

16th century is a period in which many artistic styles developed and reached a high level in the Ottoman Empire. Textile and miniature played an important role among these arts. Especially, Ottoman court textiles were included in history pages with examples rich in pattern, color, composition, style and material. The fabrics designed and manufactured especially foe the Sultan and courtiers became symbols of status with their quality and rich materials and found a price in the Ottoman Empire with the colors used and symbolic meanings of motifs. On the other hand, miniature is a visual source which underpin traditional painting and at the same time give information about the culture and life style of the time. Apart from the artistic aspects of these subjects of great importance, their contributions to pattern design are also of great importance. Pattern designs gain originality and aesthetics to textile surface. It is possible to examine textile patterns of classical period over the works of art that masters of miniature painted with a realistic perspective. In the miniature works of art belonging to Muralist Osman and Muralist Nigari, which were included in the content of the study, there are characteristic features of classical Ottoman textile patterns and motifs. In the study, qualitative research method was used; composition schemas of visual examples were drawn and examined in terms of their design features. Six miniature works of art chosen according to their different pattern features were subject to catalogue study, and the obtained findings have been discussed in the conclusion part.
