AN ANALYSIS OF YUNUS EMRE POEMS COMPOSED IN THE FORM OF TURKISH FOLK SONGS IN TERMS OF PROSODY

Abstract

ABSTRACT Prosody is the study of the sound features of a language in its various forms of expression, such as speech, text, and music. Musical prosody, in particular, involves transferring elements like syllable length, stress, and pause to a composition in a manner that is harmonious with the poem's meaning and rhythm. The correct application of prosody rules ensures that a composed piece possesses both linguistic and musical integrity. In this context, it is of great importance to match short syllables in the poetry with short notes and long syllables with long notes, to place stresses correctly, and to accurately determine points of pause. The primary aim of this study, which examines the prosodic problems encountered in the musical settings of Yunus Emre's poems, is to provide guidance to composers on the correct use of prosody. The study uses a sample of six works featured in the "Yunus Emre Poems Turkish Folk Music Composition Competition," organized by the Eskişehir Odunpazarı Municipality in 2006. These six works form the sample of the study, which aims to contribute to increasing the importance given to prosody in Turkish music composition and to fostering a healthier relationship between poetry and music. In the study, the six sample works were analyzed using Ahmet Hatipoğlu's framework for prosodic analysis. The findings indicate that there are common prosodic errors in the analyzed compositions related to syllable length, stress, and elision (ulama). Frequently observed problems include setting short syllables to long notes, long syllables to short notes, and disregarding the natural stresses of the poetry in the music. This situation causes the compositions to diverge from the meaning and rhythm of the poetry. In conclusion, the study reveals that insufficient attention has been paid to prosody in the composition of Yunus Emre's poems in the türkü form of Turkish Folk Music. It is emphasized that composers must better understand the prosodic structure of poetry and align their compositions with this structure, particularly by being more sensitive to syllable lengths, stresses, and pauses. It is believed that by doing so, the harmony between poetry and music can be enhanced, leading to the creation of higher-quality works. Furthermore, it is also recommended that prosody courses be more effectively integrated into music education.
