AN EXAMINATION OF THE CONCEPT OF COMPILER IN THE CONTEXT OF TURKISH FOLK MUSIC
Abstract
This study approaches the concept of the compiler within the context of Turkish folk music from a multi-layered perspective, revealing that the compiler is not merely a technical data collector, but also a custodian of memory who ensures cultural continuity and acts as a conduit for the transmission of knowledge between academia and the field. The process of compilation is defined as a systematic procedure involving preliminary research, fieldwork, analysis, and evaluation. It is emphasized that this process plays a critical role in the formation, preservation, and transmission of the folk music repertoire to future generations.
This research adopts a qualitative methodology, aiming to uncover the roadmaps followed during the process and the roles undertaken by individuals through document analysis. The data utilized in the study were gathered based on expert opinions and analyzed using content analysis.
The study also highlights the significance of source individuals’ repertoire and performance knowledge in the practice of folk music. It is stated that the compiler is responsible for documenting musical data accurately by establishing trust-based communication with these sources.
Furthermore, the study demonstrates the importance of the compiler in contributing data to musicological research, expanding the folk music repertoire, and laying the groundwork for the development of national music policies. It concludes that the compiler serves as an actor contributing to the preservation and continuation of folk music not only as a musical genre but also as a way of life and a component of cultural identity.
In summary, it is concluded that conducting the compilation process in adherence to ethical principles and scientific methods contributes to the preservation of regional diversity and cultural richness in Turkish folk music and strengthens its place in the cultural memory.
