The Importance of Compassionate Care in Child Development

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 6 Sayı: 3, 397 - 408, 04.12.2025

Öz

Compassion is an emotion that stems from an individual's ability to show mercy and sensitivity to the difficulties experienced by others. Compassion develops in people who can recognize another's pain and share in that pain. Compassion includes not only sensitivity towards others but also towards oneself. In this sense, it is a multidimensional concept that supports psychological well-being and enhances the quality of social relationships. It is known that compassionate and sensitive care in children's development has positive effects on secure attachment, school adjustment, academic achievement, and psychological resilience. Therefore, adopting compassion-based approaches in the family environment and educational processes is critical for children's healthy development. Compassion, sensitivity, and empathy are important not only in childhood but also in adolescence; they contribute to reducing developmental problems, alleviating stress, and lowering the risk of depression. Especially in sick children, compassionate care, empathy, and supportive communication facilitate the process of accepting and adapting to illness. Conversely, insufficient experiences of compassion weaken individuals' capacity for emotional regulation and create vulnerability to psychological problems. Therefore, compassion is a fundamental value for lifelong mental health and adjustment. This review was created to highlight the importance of compassionate care in a child's development.
