Phenotypic Diversity Assessment of Maize (Zea mays spp.) Germplasm from Azerbaijan
Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyze the genetic resources of Azerbaijani maize genotypes according to some morphological characteristics and to reveal phenotypic diversity. The aim of this study is to analyze the genetic resources of Azerbaijani maize genotypes according to some morphological characteristics and to reveal phenotypic diversity. The study was carried out in Zagatala (2021) and Baku (2022) ecological condition. 110 maize genotypes were used as material in the research. Augmented design models, cluster analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to obtain phenotypic diversity. 6 morphological traits of plant and ear structure were examined in the study. PC1 and PC2 demonstrated the presence of more than 50% phenotypic diversity in the collection, as evidenced by characteristics such as plant height, first ear length, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, and ear length. Clustering identified 5 distinct groups. Crossing individuals from different groups in hybrid plants will increase the heterosis effect. In future studies, it is recommended to continue breeding studies in some maize genotypes that are considered promising in terms of morphological characters and to conduct more detailed studies using other molecular marker techniques.
