Effect of Different Harvest Stages on the Yield and Some Forage Quality Components of Sweet Sorghum (Sorghum Bicolor Var. Saccharatum) Cultivars
Abstract
Objective: This study was conducted in order to determine dry matter (DM) yield, silage fermentation and some forage quality components of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor var. saccharatum) grown in summer second crop production period, on the experimental fields of Faculty of Agriculture, Ege University under Mediterranean ecological conditions of Bornova-Izmir during two years in 2013-2014.
Material and Methods: Two different sweet sorghum cultivars (Keller and Rio cv.) were used as crop material. Sweet sorghums were cut three different harvesting stages (panicle emergence, anthesis and doughy), and, field experiment were conducted with three replicates. Some traits were tested in the experiment such as DM yield, sugar content, silage pH, and crude protein content, cell wall properties.
Results: Results indicated that, there were significant differences between harvest stages and sweet sorghum varieties in terms of above-mentioned characteristics. Delaying harvest stage affected positively on DM yield and fermentation quality but not forage characteristics (metabolisable energy and NDF, ADF). It was also concluded that Keller cv. was superior to Rio cv. with regard to abovementioned traits.
