Effects of Microalgae Application on Yield and Quality Properties of Salad (Lactuca sativa L. var. crispa) and Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. longifolia) Cultivars

Abstract

Objective: Salad and lettuce has an important place among the vegetables consumed in Turkey and in the world, are grown all year round in temperate climates, due to being low calorie rich in nutrients, consumption and production increase with each passing day. Several organic and inorganic compound obtained from various sources has been used as a plant growth regulator for cultivation, and in recent years use of the micro and macro algae’s (seaweeds) or their extracts as fertilizer has become widespread.
Material and Methods: In this study, effects of blue algae (S. plantensis) application on yield and quality of lettuce and salad and were investigated. In the experiment, two lettuces and two salads cultivars were used as plant material. Dried powdered S. platensis was dissolved in water in 0.5 mg/L, 1 mg/L, 1.5 mg/L, 2 mg/L doses and applied to the plants in twice 3 and 6 weeks after transplanting.
Results: The effects of microalgae applications on plant weight, plant diameter, plant height, number of marketable leaves, discard number of leaves, dry matter content, of salad and lettuce varieties were statistically significant.
Conclusion: It was found that while the response of the varieties to the application dose differed according to the examined quality components, it was determined that the application of S. platensis at the dose of 1.5 mg/L was the most effective dose for plant growth, particularly on the yield.
