The Contribution of Multispectral Data in Soil Survey and Mapping Studies with Stereo Photo Interpretation Techniques

Abstract

Objective: In the research, it was aimed to investigate the possibility of utilizing multi-band satellite images and the contribution level of this acquisition to soil survey and mapping studies during the soil survey and mapping studies carried out by stereo-photo interpretation method.
Material and Method: The study consists of two main parts. In the first part, the traditional soil survey and mapping studies were carried out, and in the second part, the investigation of the contribution of satellite images combined to the series-based soil survey studies.
Results: With this research, the soil remaining in the study area was identified, mapped and soil survey and mapping studies were completed with the determination of the taxonomic class according to the soil classification systems. For this purpose, besides the morphological features of the soils, physical and chemical analyzes determined in the laboratory and used as criteria in soil classification were also concluded. The soils were classified according to the Soil Taxonomy system that has been accepted on international platforms and also we use in our country.
After fusion the satellite images created in the second part of the study with aerial photographs, they were enriched spectrally and their contribution to soil survey and mapping studies were investigated. It determined that spectrally weak aerial photographs gain important features that could increase the accuracy of border-drawing after fusion process with spectrally enhanced satellite images
Conclusion: In this study, the contribution of the data provided by the multi-band imaging technique was investigated in the studies for stereo aerial photo interpretation for soil map. In the research, multispectral data, especially infrared, obtained from the stereo aerial photographs and WV-2 satellite images, were combined within the “Fuse” technique, and the interpretation for soil mapping was exemplified with the new stereo image created.
